Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Q: How do you work with different age groups at once?
A: I plan activities that allow for different levels of participation. For example, during Circle Time, preschoolers sing songs and discuss different topics. Toddlers join in by doing the hand-gestures that go along with the songs, listening, and sharing as much as they are able. Babies sit or lie on the floor, listening to the songs and voices, and watching the faces and actions. During art, the preschoolers might work on painting different shapes with watercolors, while the toddlers just explore with paint. Sitting babies might use a foam brush and a cup of water to participate and practice fine motor skills.
Q: Will my child have enough time to play / learn?
A: Luckily for children, they learn by playing! While I schedule certain times for “lessons” and “free play”, these events are not exclusive of each other. For example a science lesson might involve water play or a nature scavenger hunt, both of which are fun for kids. Free play might involve building with blocks, where children develop their motor skills and learn about geometric principles. All day long your child will be playing and learning simultaneously!
Q: I see that the schedule includes science, math, and social studies activities. What does this mean for a three year old?
A: My Second Home Daycare’s preschool curriculum focuses on developing the skills and ideas that provide a foundation for later academic learning. In science we learn about animals, our bodies, nutrition, and the seasons. Math skills include sorting, counting, measuring, and recognizing patterns. In social studies we explore families, cultures, neighborhoods, and occupations. These ideas are later built upon in kindergarten and elementary school.
